Build an incremental stream consumer around the preserved RAG baseline answers. The original recording contains complete model messages. This lab derives application frames locally, feeds them through arbitrary byte fragments, and validates the final reply without calling a model. A separate Gemini adapter below records real provider streaming.
When you need this. Use it when an application receives output in pieces and must distinguish provisional content from a completed reply with source links checked against its request context.
Prerequisites. Review Record a RAG Baseline for the original questions, requests and model responses. This replay uses those exact requests. It does not generate answers for the new context-engineering fixture or a changed prompt.
Keep the recording separate from replay framing
The original complete recording is copied byte for byte and checked against its file hash. A development-only allowlist selects the saved replies. Historic held-out responses remain in the untouched recording but are not replayed by this lab.
The local producer divides saved raw JSON content into application content_delta frames and appends a local terminal frame. It then serializes frames as newline-delimited JSON, or NDJSON. Arbitrary byte fragments split that serialized input again. Application frames, transport fragments and model tokens are different boundaries.
Changed request. The binding includes the original messages, request hash, schema, corpus identity and selected context. Editing any of them is refused rather than applying a saved answer to a new request. The recording hash and binding check consistency; they do not authenticate an external provider.
No original provider delta boundaries or token timings were recorded. The derived frames replay saved replies. They do not reproduce Ollama’s original streaming boundaries, measure latency or contain a newly generated answer.
Decode fragments before interpreting frames
An incremental UTF-8 decoder retains incomplete character bytes between calls. A separate buffer retains incomplete NDJSON lines. Only a complete line is parsed as an application frame, so a transport read need not end at a character or JSON boundary.
The consumer checks frame shape, consecutive sequence numbers, request binding and bounded input sizes. Provisional content is still raw answer JSON text; it is not a parsed answer field ready for acceptance. The controlled UTF-8 test uses a labeled synthetic transport probe, not an invented model recording.
Wait for the terminal and the complete input body
A local done frame records a completion claim. This consumer waits until the supplied input iterator ends before accepting the answer, so trailing frames or unfinished bytes cannot be ignored. That boundary is the end of this input body, not a claim that every live streaming connection must close.
Interrupted input. A missing terminal, truncated frame or truncated UTF-8 sequence leaves no accepted answer. Local cancellation and error terminals also withhold accepted output, even if the provisional JSON happens to be complete. A controlled producer I/O error retains the partial trace without accepting it.
These cancellation frames exercise the application’s local state contract. They do not test a provider cancellation API, network retry policy or a deployed HTTP service.
| Controlled scenario | Result | Reason | Accepted answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| controlled_local_cancel | cancelled | controlled_local_cancel | false |
| controlled_local_error | error | controlled_local_error | false |
| controlled_transport_eof_before_terminal | incomplete | missing_terminal | false |
| controlled_local_transport_io_error | error | transport_io_error | false |
Validate the final reply before exposing links
After completion, the consumer parses the entire JSON document with duplicate-key and nonfinite-constant rejection. It checks the exact reply fields, allowed status, answer text and citation consistency. An answered reply needs source IDs; a not_in_docs reply must not attach citations.
Unknown citation. A source ID outside the exact selected context is refused. Source links resolve from that bound context, never from a URL supplied by the model. A known ID and valid shape do not prove that the passage supports every answer claim.
| Case | Stream result | Saved reply status | Resolved citations |
|---|---|---|---|
| utf8-write | complete | not_in_docs | 0 |
| replace-file | complete | answered | 1 |
| json-result-type | complete | answered | 1 |
| backup-schedule | complete | not_in_docs | 0 |
The UTF-8 writing case completes this stream contract while retaining its original not_in_docs response. Completion does not fix the baseline’s retrieval or answer failure. The program preserves that outcome rather than replacing it with a better answer.
Execute the local streaming contract
Download the complete lab. It includes the unchanged recording, provenance, producer, consumer, failure tests and actual execution record. The producer and consumer run locally as a CLI; no model server or provider key is required.

"interpretation": "Schema and known-context citation validation are protocol checks, not factual answer or citation-support review."
}The actual command replays saved replies through derived application frames and retains cancellation, corrupt-frame, incomplete-input and transport-error cases. It does not capture fresh provider streaming.
Compare the recorded behavior
Trace a provisional-content event through its local terminal and final validation event. Compare it with an interrupted-input case, then explain why a plausible partial answer cannot inherit the complete run’s source links. Finally inspect the UTF-8 writing case: distinguish successful stream handling from a correct task outcome.
Read the explanation
Transport completion and reply validation are separate from whether an answer is correct.
Consume a real Gemini provider stream
The replay above tests application framing with deterministic failures. The added adapter instead reads actual SSE events from Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite through streamGenerateContent. This is a one-way generation stream, separate from the Gemini Live API’s bidirectional socket.
Each provider text event becomes one provisional application delta. These boundaries are not token boundaries. The adapter emits done only after the provider reports STOP; an early EOF leaves the consumer incomplete, and another finish reason produces an error. The existing consumer then parses the complete JSON and checks source IDs against the exact supplied context. The raw request files retain provider events and local arrival timings; they do not measure server token-generation times. The application frames reuse the historical context binding for the existing consumer. The fresh Gemini request has a different model, system instruction and provider-request hash; the run manifest links both hashes and checks that the supplied user context is identical.
The UTF-8 question still receives only reading context, so the fresh streamed reply declines. The writing and JSON cases return source IDs from their supplied context, while the backup question declines. This demonstrates a real provider stream without claiming that streaming repairs retrieval or grades answer truth.

The NDJSON specification, sections 3.1–3.2, and Python incremental decoding documentation were checked on 23 October 2026. They explain UTF-8 framing and decoder state. The official Ollama streaming guide documents its provider protocol; this lab uses its own locally derived application frames and does not claim live Ollama-stream compatibility. Saved-answer provenance remains in the original baseline recording.
The Gemini additions use the official model documentation, generation API and pricing, checked on 24 October 2026.
