Lesson 19 of 36Module 7

Assemble context within a token budget

Count complete requests and keep whole windows

Fit validated RAG windows into a complete templated request using the pinned local tokenizer, with whole-window admission, output reserve and failure records.

Prerequisites

The preceding corpus and retrieval modules; source revision and chunk identity.

By the end, you can

  • Map validated source windows into complete passages with source references.
  • Reuse the assembler and count the full pinned chat template before admission.
  • Inspect dropped windows, required-input overflow and empty-retrieval behavior.
Runtime
Python 3.11+ with the prepared pinned tokenizer environment and hash-verified local tokenizer files
Dependencies
transformers 5.20.1, huggingface-hub 2.2.0 and jinja2 3.1.6; full pins in requirements.lock

Fit the surrounding-context windows into a token-bounded request. A small RAG adapter supplies verified windows to the existing context assembler. The pinned local tokenizer renders and counts the request; no model weights load and no answer is generated.

When you need this. Use it when expanded source windows contain useful context but their text, citation labels and request wrappers may exceed the available input allowance.

Prerequisites. Use Retrieve Surrounding Context. The context-budget lesson supplies the earlier budgeting concepts. Prepare the lab environment below and point it at the existing tokenizer cache.

The counter renders the complete pinned chat template, including passage wrappers and the generation prefix. A kept window remains whole; its content is not clipped to fill the remaining budget. No model generates an answer.

Wrap exact windows as cited passages

The adapter validates the chunk index and recomputes the supplied windows before using them. Its separate ranked seed list must exactly match the expansion record. Each whole window becomes one cited passage; its source label records the source, version, revision, section and character span.

Priority comes from the earliest contributing seed rank. This is an explicit assembly order, not a new relevance score. The original chunk IDs and member roles remain in the record so a citation can be traced back through the window to its source. Use kept_evidence to distinguish admitted windows from records for dropped candidates.

The roomy fixture deliberately supplies windows from multiple documentation versions. Retaining version metadata does not filter conflicting versions; source eligibility must be decided before assembly.

Changed passage. A modified window payload, span, member ID or missing seed is refused before request assembly. The adapter does not accept a citation label attached to arbitrary replacement text.

Reserve output before admitting passages

The reused assembler subtracts the configured output reserve and margin from the fixture context limit. Instructions and the current question are required. Optional passages are considered by priority, and a window is kept only when the complete candidate request fits. A window that does not fit is dropped whole; a later smaller window may still fit.

Required overflow. If the required request alone exceeds the available input allowance, the assembler raises RequiredContextTooLarge. It does not remove the question or instruction message to make the accounting pass.

The roomy and tight limits below are controlled fixture settings, not a statement about the model’s maximum context length. Both runs use the same question and windows.

Count the serialized request rather than its pieces

The counter applies the pinned Gemma chat template with its generation prefix and thinking disabled. Each admission attempt counts the full request again, including instructions, question, source labels, passage delimiters and template control tokens. Counting passage text alone would omit those fields. Separate text counts are recorded only as a diagnostic contrast.

The adapter reuses the existing assembler, request contract and tokenizer files byte for byte; it does not rebuild the general history or tool-exchange policies in this lesson. Its new responsibility is the boundary between RAG source windows and request passages. A different tokenizer or chat template needs a different count and compatibility check.

An empty retrieval result still preserves instructions and the question. Literal passage delimiters are escaped inside the user message. The supplied untrusted-text fixture checks that it cannot open a new passage block or message role through this rendering path. Escaping does not stop a model from following malicious instructions expressed as ordinary passage text.

Execute tokenizer-only context assembly

Download the complete lab. It includes the copied assembler and tokenizer manifest, RAG adapter, synthetic sources, tests and actual result. The large tokenizer files remain in the prepared cache and are verified against the manifest; they are not bundled as a new download.

The counter loads tokenizer files only. The CLI returns assembled messages and assembly records without calling a model or serving HTTP. This run contains no answer-quality, server prompt-count, latency or capacity measurement.

The overflow fixture requires 1,228 input tokens with only 176 available. Compare that refusal with the admitted windows in the tight run.

Compare the recorded behavior

Compare the tight run with the roomy run. Trace a kept window back to its source slice, then explain which full-request fields would be missing from a passage-only count. Inspect the required-overflow record and the literal-boundary case; distinguish a counted request from a correct or safe generated answer.

The passage text fits a remaining allowance by itself. What decides whether its complete window can be kept?

Choose one answer, then check your reasoning.

Read the explanation

Reserve output tokens and margin before admitting passages; a tokenizer-only check makes no answer-quality claim.

The official Transformers chat-template guide, checked on 23 October 2026, explains serialization and the generation prompt. This run uses the copied pinned Gemma tokenizer manifest and installed Transformers 5.20.1 implementation; the local files and template hashes are recorded in the lab. Admission policy and source-window validation come from the supplied code, not a model evaluation.
