You will turn six internal developer documents into 16 searchable chunks with LangChain text splitters and the Ollama embeddings adapter. Each chunk keeps its source and team beside a 1024-number vector. The download includes a recorded local run and the vectors used by the later PostgreSQL labs.
When you need this. You maintain a developer documentation search. A changed page, embedding model or splitting rule can change what a question retrieves; those settings need to travel with the vectors.
1. Split documents without losing their source
Download the complete lab, extract it and open a terminal in build-an-embedding-pipeline/. The README lists its runtime and recorded examples.
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -r library-requirements-lock.txtdocs.json contains fictional internal documentation for a platform team and a data team: deployments, search-index rebuilds, API-key rotation and data catalogs.
documents() first uses MarkdownHeaderTextSplitter to attach the title and section to each passage. RecursiveCharacterTextSplitter then limits chunks to 420 characters with 60 characters of overlap. Those are characters, not model tokens. The splitter prefers paragraph and word boundaries where possible; it does not guarantee that every fact fits inside one chunk.
Each Document has page_content, metadata and a stable UUID derived from its source ID and chunk text. Unchanged chunks keep their ID. Editing a chunk changes that ID, so replacing a whole document also requires deleting its old IDs; the store lesson implements deletion explicitly.
def documents(path: Path = ROOT / 'docs.json') -> list[Document]:
headers = MarkdownHeaderTextSplitter(headers_to_split_on=[('#', 'title'), ('##', 'section')])
splitter = RecursiveCharacterTextSplitter(chunk_size=420, chunk_overlap=60)
chunks = []
for source in json.loads(path.read_text()):
for part in splitter.split_documents(headers.split_text(source['text'])):
key = str(uuid5(NAMESPACE_URL, source['id'] + '\n' + part.page_content))
chunks.append(Document(id=key, page_content=part.page_content,
metadata={**part.metadata, 'source': source['id'], 'team': source['team']}))
return chunks2. Use the embeddings adapter
Use the extracted lab and virtual environment from Step 1. Set PG_BIN to your PostgreSQL 17 binary directory if needed. The helper starts a temporary cluster on an unused local port and removes it after the run.
python3 -m venv .venv
.venv/bin/pip install -r library-requirements-lock.txt
.venv/bin/python record_library_embeddings.pyThe installed Ollama server must already have qwen3-embedding:0.6b. OllamaEmbeddings.embed_documents() handles the model request. The small DocsEmbeddings subclass adds Qwen’s documented retrieval instruction only to questions, then delegates to the same adapter. It does not implement another HTTP client or embedding model.
The recorder saves the vectors, then gives the same values to RecordedEmbeddings for the PostgreSQL checks. PGVectorStore.add_documents() inserts text, team metadata and vectors into database rows; similarity_search_with_score() executes the team-filtered query. The JSON vector file is a reusable model-output record, not the search engine.

main()The pinned Ollama adapter uses the server’s default truncation behavior; it does not expose a refusal flag for overlong inputs. These short supplied chunks fit the model, but a character limit is not a token-budget check for another corpus. Check token limits before using larger inputs.
A document vector and a query vector have the same dimension but different input formats. Record both formats. Comparing vectors from unrelated models just because their dimensions agree can return plausible-looking, meaningless neighbors.
3. Keep one embedding identity
The manifest records the model tag and digest, dimension, query instruction, chunk settings and corpus hash. The cited-answer program compares that manifest with its current documents and installed model before it embeds a new question.
A model digest changes. A mutable model tag may now name another build. The identity check refuses the new build; create a new version of the search table and re-embed its documents before switching readers.
Chunk settings change. Changing the split size or overlap changes the text represented by a vector. Rebuild the table rather than attaching old vectors to newly split chunks. The manifest comparison catches that configuration change; it does not measure whether the new chunks improve retrieval.
4. Inspect the saved search
The recorded run embeds 16 chunks and six developer questions. Each question retrieves the expected document first after its team filter. This small supplied set checks those questions, not general search quality. Use a larger workload before drawing capacity conclusions.
A replay receives an unknown question. RecordedEmbeddings raises KeyError rather than invent a vector. Replaying the saved questions needs no model call. Use the real adapter to ask a new question, while keeping the same embedding identity.
