Lesson 2 of 6

Build a PostgreSQL vector store with LangChain

Use PGVectorStore to insert, replace, filter and delete internal documentation chunks, then test retries and a partially written batch.

Prerequisites

Python, JSON, SQL tables and vector similarity. The lab README lists model and database setup; saved-vector tests need no API key.

By the end, you can

  • Create a typed PostgreSQL vector table through PGEngine and PGVectorStore.
  • Retry stable chunk IDs, reopen the table and delete all chunks of a removed source.
  • Test filtered queries and partial writes without treating filters as authorization.
Runtime
Python 3.12+ and PostgreSQL 17 with pgvector
Dependencies
LangChain PostgreSQL, Ollama and Gemini integrations; NumPy; Pillow (locked versions in the download)

Lab code, tests and fixtures (ZIP, 1.7 MB)Quiz check your understanding

Progress is saved in this browser.

You will load the 16 documentation chunks into PostgreSQL through PGVectorStore, retry the load, reopen the table and delete a removed document. The recorded run still has 16 rows after retrying, then 13 after deleting the three deployment chunks.

When you need this. Your search index must reflect page updates and removals. A vector search that keeps returning an old procedure can be wrong even when its distance calculation is correct.

Keep search rows up to dateDocumentstable ID · textteam · vectorPGVectorStoreadd_documentssame ID updates the rowPostgreSQL docs tabletext + teamvector(1024)similarity_searchWHERE team =requested teamDelete every chunk ID for a removed source. PGVectorStore uses a stable chunk ID to replace a row. Searching reads stored text and vectors; deleting the IDs of a removed document prevents those chunks from returning.

1. Create the table through PGEngine

Download the complete lab, extract it and open a terminal in build-a-vector-store/. The README lists its runtime and recorded examples.

Prepare the local labTerminal · bash
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -r library-requirements-lock.txt

PGEngine owns a SQLAlchemy connection pool, which reuses database connections across operations. init_vectorstore_table() creates a text ID, the chunk content, a vector(1024) column, a typed team column and JSON metadata for source paths and headings. PGVectorStore.create_sync() connects the LangChain embeddings interface to that table.

        with vector_store(pg.url,RecordedEmbeddings(saved)) as store:
            store.add_documents(chunks,ids=[d.id for d in chunks])
            before=store.similarity_search(question,k=3,filter={'team':'platform'})
            # Stable IDs make a retry replace those rows rather than duplicate them.

    (ROOT/'library-lifecycle.json').write_text(json.dumps(output,indent=2)+'\n'); print(json.dumps(output,indent=2))
if __name__=='__main__': main()

The lab uses the saved real model vectors so PostgreSQL checks need no model server. Run it with the dependencies in the lab README:

Terminal commandsTerminal · bash
.venv/bin/python library_store.py

The context manager closes the engine’s connection pool before the temporary PostgreSQL cluster stops. Reopening uses the existing table; it does not initialize over it.

2. Replace rows with stable IDs

add_documents() sends content and metadata to the integration. In this pinned release it uses INSERT ... ON CONFLICT on the supplied ID. A retry with the same ID updates text, vector and metadata. The test replaces both content and team, then checks that the old team no longer returns that row.

A document retry creates duplicates. If each retry creates a new random ID, PostgreSQL sees different rows. Supply the chunk IDs from the split document. The lab retries those same IDs and checks the row count after reopening the table.

A batch fails after its first document. PGVectorStore 0.0.19 commits each document separately. The regression test supplies a correct first vector and an incorrectly sized second vector: PostgreSQL rejects the second, while the first remains searchable. The batch is not atomic. Retry known IDs after fixing the failed input; do not treat an exception as an empty write. A separate index version, with readers switched to it only after rebuilding finishes, can keep readers away from an incomplete rebuild, but this lab does not implement a table-switching service.

3. Delete the old source chunks

A removed page still appears in search. Deleting the source file leaves its stored rows in place. Collect every indexed chunk ID for that source and call delete(ids=...). The recorded run removes the three platform/deploy chunks and checks that none of those IDs remains among the results.

A changed chunk gets a new content-derived ID. Replacing a document therefore means loading its new chunks and deleting IDs that belonged only to its previous version. Updating one row is not a complete document lifecycle by itself.

4. Filter before returning results

similarity_search(question, k=3, filter={"team": "platform"}) asks the integration to include a SQL predicate on the typed metadata column. The recorded questions use the platform or data team as appropriate. PostgreSQL ranks the eligible rows under the selected search plan; an approximate index can return fewer candidates after filtering, which the next lesson measures.

A filter value contains SQL. The integration binds values as parameters. The test sends a string resembling an SQL condition as a team value and gets no matching rows; a subsequent ordinary search still works. This checks that value handling, not arbitrary field names or every possible filter expression.

A caller can omit or alter a team filter. This is a result-selection feature, not authorization. Enforce caller access separately before retrieving private documents.
