Lesson 5 of 6

Build multimodal RAG with chart source references

Retrieve chart descriptions with PGVectorStore, send selected PNGs to Gemini, and check image identity separately from quoted source text.

Prerequisites

Python, JSON, SQL tables and vector similarity. The lab README lists model and database setup; saved-vector tests need no API key.

By the end, you can

  • Retrieve chart descriptions and retain the selected image source IDs.
  • Check image pixels with Pillow before sending multimodal messages to Gemini.
  • Compare description-only and image answers without confusing source identity with answer correctness.
Runtime
Python 3.12+ and PostgreSQL 17 with pgvector
Dependencies
LangChain PostgreSQL, Ollama and Gemini integrations; NumPy; Pillow (locked versions in the download)

Lab code, tests and fixtures (ZIP, 583 KB)Quiz check your understanding

You will search descriptions of two retained latency charts with PGVectorStore, then send the selected PNGs to Gemini. In one recorded comparison, description-only input abstains; image input reads that the medium model has the lowest illustrated p95 latency, 380 ms. Those are supplied chart values, not measurements of this RAG pipeline.

When you need this. A developer runbook includes charts whose values are absent from its searchable prose. Search can find the right chart while the answer still needs its pixels.

PGVectorStore searches text descriptions of retained charts. Selected source IDs identify the PNGs sent to Gemini. A grayscale hash is checked before sending the image; a mismatch raises ValueError before any image reaches Gemini. Color changes with identical grayscale values are not detected. A text excerpt alone cannot confirm a chart value.

1. Index a description, keep the image reference

Download the complete lab, extract it and open a terminal in build-multimodal-rag-with-verifiable-source-references/. The README lists its runtime and recorded examples.

Prepare the local labTerminal · bash
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -r library-requirements-lock.txt

This lab reuses the existing p50 and p95 chart PNGs. It does not redraw them or reuse an older model answer. library-figures.json supplies a short searchable description, the file path and the existing pixel hash for each chart. The descriptions name the chart but intentionally omit its bar values.

The same DocsEmbeddings adapter produces description vectors. PGVectorStore returns the selected Document objects with their source ID, image path and saved hash. This is text retrieval followed by image reading, not a joint image-and-text embedding model.

2. Bind each selected image to its source

Pillow.Image.open() decodes the selected PNG. The helper converts it to grayscale and hashes the dimensions plus pixel bytes, matching the original grayscale chart hash format. It compares that hash before placing any image in the model input. This checks grayscale values: a color-only change that preserves those values would not be detected.

A chart changes after indexing. The check refuses changes to dimensions or grayscale pixels before a model call. Rebuild the description and source entry when a chart changes; otherwise a search description may refer to an older chart.

PNG compression changes but pixels do not. A byte hash of the file would change, but the pixel hash remains the same. The test recompresses a retained image and checks this distinction. The matching grayscale hash does not establish full color identity or whether the chart’s labels and data are correct.

3. Send text and images through the model adapter

An image loses its source ID. image_blocks() puts a text block naming the selected source ID immediately before that image’s data-URL block. The test checks their pairing. The model can then return the same ID in the structured citation rather than guessing which of several images it read.

ChatGoogleGenerativeAI receives the source descriptions and the selected PNGs through standard multimodal message blocks. It returns the same typed Answer shape as the text RAG lab. The quote check looks for an excerpt of the description, while the answer reads the number from the image.

Run the comparison with the lab’s locked packages, the existing local embedding model and a configured Gemini API key:

Terminal commandsTerminal · bash
.venv/bin/python library_multimodal.py

4. Compare descriptions with images

The text description lacks the requested values. Both modes retrieve the same chart entries for the p95 question. The description-only call abstains because those descriptions contain no bar values. The image call reads medium, 380 ms, from the retained p95 chart. Each mode was run once with Gemini 3.8 Flash; this is a comparison of those two calls, not an accuracy rate.

The p50 chart has different values, so citing the wrong percentile can produce a plausible but wrong answer. The saved response names the p95 source. The test checks the recorded value and source pairing, while image identity checks operate before generation.

A matching description quote does not validate a number read from pixels. A wrong value could still pass the structural citation checks. Compare the answer with the displayed chart; evaluating a larger question set needs separate expected answers and repeated runs.

The grayscale hash matches and the answer quotes the chart description. Does that establish that the numeric answer is correct?

This hash checks the supplied image’s grayscale values, not its full color content or the answer. A separate comparison with the chart is needed to assess the model's numeric answer.
