Build and compare chunk indexes for a clearly labeled synthetic developer API. The fixture places an operation instruction and its qualifier in adjacent paragraphs, so a supplied span check can show which policies keep them together. No real SDK behavior or production incident is being asserted.
When you need this. Use it when a retrieved fragment can omit a nearby qualifier and you need to inspect how the boundary rule changes the exact text stored as one chunk.
Prerequisites. Review source and chunk versioning. This lab reuses the pinned local-file loader, then applies a separate explicit chunk schema to the new synthetic fixture. It does not reuse the old embedding recording for changed text.
Compare policies on the same source text
A chunk is a source slice used as an independent retrieval unit. This program compares fixed-character slices, whole paragraphs and a heading-aware rule that groups neighboring paragraphs up to a target size. All policies stay inside a heading section, including the fixed-character baseline.
The heading-aware size is a grouping target, not a hard maximum. A single paragraph larger than the target remains whole. The supported input is the fixture’s simple ATX heading and blank-line grammar; this is not a general Markdown parser for code fences or every heading convention.
The instruction and qualifier spans are supplied fixture checks. The following results come from building each index, not from a person assigning a quality score. The heading-aware policy keeps both spans in one chunk in this fixture; the other policies split them.

This checks span containment only. It does not show that a retriever would return that chunk, that an answer would use its qualifier, or that the same policy is best for other documents.
Bind identities to the source and configuration
The local loader verifies source bytes against the manifest before decoding. The index records normalized text, source revision, section identity, source order, line spans and half-open character offsets. Character offsets are Python text positions, not UTF-8 byte offsets.
A chunk ID hashes its exact payload together with the boundary configuration. The index ID binds the complete index. Changing a boundary policy or source revision therefore cannot silently retain an old chunk identity. The validator reconstructs the expected derivations and refuses inconsistent saved artifacts.
Changed source. Editing the pinned source file without updating its manifest raises IngestionError during loading. Updating the manifest deliberately would create a new input revision; the old recording does not describe that new input.
Changed span. Altering a saved chunk’s order, span or payload is refused even if an outer index hash is recomputed. The validator checks the derived chunk structure as well as the stored index record. These hashes check consistency and pinned inputs; they do not authenticate an untrusted publisher.

}The learner command prints 13 fixed-character, eight paragraph and seven heading-aware chunks. Only the heading-aware case keeps the selected instruction and its qualifier together.
Compare the recorded behavior
Find the instruction and qualifier spans in the raw comparison. Locate them in the source and explain why the paragraph policy separates them while the heading-aware grouping keeps them together. Then change a saved span in a scratch copy and run validation: expect a refusal rather than a plausible-looking reused ID.
