Lesson 8 of 9Module 3

Add human-in-the-loop interrupts

Pause a LangGraph code-review agent with interrupt() before it posts a comment, then resume it with Command(resume=...) to approve, edit or reject.

Prerequisites

The agent from Build a graph agent with tools (lesson 1 of this course): StateGraph, ToolNode and the agent loop. Python 3.12 or later and a Gemini API key, or Ollama with the gemma4:e2b model.

By the end, you can

  • Pause a LangGraph run with interrupt() before a tool call that writes, and resume it with Command(resume=...) on the same thread.
  • Apply a reviewer's approve, edit or reject decision to a pending tool call, with the decision validated against a schema.
  • Explain what the checkpointer saves at the pause, why the paused node runs again on resume, and how to keep a resumed write from happening twice.
Runtime
Python 3.12+, a Gemini API key (or Ollama with gemma4:e2b)
Dependencies
langgraph 1.2.16, langchain-core 1.6.12, langchain-google-genai 4.4.2, langchain-ollama 1.1.0, pydantic 2.14.1; pytest 9.1.1 for the offline tests

The agent from the first lesson only reads. Give it a tool that writes, such as posting a review comment that the whole team sees, and every tool call the model proposes becomes an action. In this lesson the agent drafts the comment, and the graph stops before posting it. A reviewer approves the comment, edits it or rejects it, and the run continues from where it stopped, in the same process or a later one. LangGraph does this with interrupt(), which pauses a node and saves the run in a checkpointer, and Command(resume=...), which continues it. One recorded thread on Gemini (gemini-3.8-flash):

The run stopped at step 3 with nothing posted, waited, and posted exactly one comment after the decision.

When you need this. A proposed pull-request review comment will notify other developers. Pause before posting so a reviewer can approve, edit or reject its exact text. If the decision must survive a process exit, use a durable checkpointer for the pending proposal.

Add a tool that writes

Download the complete lab, extract it and open a terminal in add-human-in-the-loop-interrupts/. The README lists its runtime and recorded examples.

Prepare the local labTerminal · bash

python -m pip install -r requirements-lock.txt

post_review_comment stands in for a code host’s API: it inserts a row into a SQLite file, code_host.sqlite. Unlike the read-only tools, running it twice has a visible effect, so it stores the tool call’s ID with the comment as an idempotency key, under a UNIQUE constraint. A second run of the same call returns Already posted and posts nothing, even from a new process. The key is kept with the comment, not in the agent’s memory, because the replay that matters comes after a restart, and a new process starts with empty variables.

raise LookupError(f"Thread {config['configurable']['thread_id']!r} has no pending review.")
    return graph.invoke(Command(resume=decision), config)
  • Route. route sends a reply with no tool calls to END and read-only calls straight to tools. A reply that contains post_review_comment goes to human_review. The policy is in your code, keyed by tool name, not in the prompt.
  • Pause. interrupt() stops the node and returns its payload, the tool name and arguments, to the caller under __interrupt__. When the run resumes, the same call returns the reviewer’s decision. response_schema=Decision validates that decision with Pydantic before the node sees it.
  • Approve and edit. Both go to tools. An edit replaces the comment body in the tool call and returns the AIMessage with its original ID. The add_messages reducer replaces a message that has the same ID instead of appending it, so the state keeps one proposal, the edited one.
  • Reject. The node answers every tool call in the message with a ToolMessage that says it was not run, so no call is left without a result, and ends the run with a reply built from the decision.
  • Checkpointer. build_graph passes the checkpointer to compile. Without one, the graph can pause but cannot resume.

resume() checks that the thread is waiting before it sends Command(resume=decision). The reason is in the failure cases.

The decision schema checks the action name and field types. Its body field is optional even for edit, so the caller must supply the replacement text for an edit; the schema alone does not require it or check that it expresses the reviewer’s intent. Validate the action-specific fields in a review interface before submitting the decision.

Why an interrupt in a node

compile(interrupt_before=["tools"]) would also pause before ToolNode, but before every tool call, including the reads, and it carries no payload or decision schema. Letting the model call an approval tool, such as ask_reviewer, leaves the decision to ask with the model. Calling interrupt() inside post_review_comment itself, as the interrupts documentation also shows, puts approval logic in every tool that writes. A routing node keeps the policy in one place and the tool a plain function you can test alone.

Run it on Gemini

Export your Gemini API key as GOOGLE_API_KEY and run the recorder. With REVIEW_MODEL=gemma4:e2b, the same graph runs on a local Ollama model.

Terminal commandsTerminal · bash
python3 -m pip install -r requirements-lock.txt
python3 record.py

record.py runs three threads and answers each pause as a reviewer would: approve on review-415, edit on review-412, reject on review-418. Then it runs the failure cases below.

The edited thread posted the reviewer’s text, not the model’s draft. The rejected thread posted nothing, and its reply came from the decision.

What the checkpointer saves

The checkpointer saves a checkpoint after every step, keyed by the thread_id in the run’s config. While review-415 was paused, graph.get_state(config) returned the latest one: step 3, next node human_review, and 5 messages, human | ai: calls get_diff, get_ci_status | tool | tool | ai: calls post_review_comment. Its pending task, human_review, held the interrupt payload. The thread had 5 checkpoints while paused and 8 after the approved run finished; the rejected run, which ended without the tools and agent steps, had 6.

A resume does not continue from the line where interrupt() was called. LangGraph loads the checkpoint and runs human_review again from its first line; this time interrupt() returns the decision instead of pausing. A test counts the calls: two for one approved review. Any code above interrupt() runs twice, so it must have no side effects. A notification sent there goes out twice. human_review only reads the state, and the write happens later, in ToolNode.

InMemorySaver keeps checkpoints in the Python process, which suits a test or a single script. The documentation recommends a durable checkpointer in production, because a reviewer may answer hours later, after the process that paused has stopped.

Troubleshooting

The model’s reply to a rejection is not a record of what happened. In the first version of the graph, a rejection sent the Not run tool messages back to the model to write the reply. Gemini read Not run: the reviewer rejected the comment and reported the rejection correctly. The same graph on the local gemma4:e2b answered I posted a review comment confirming the removal of the legacy CSV export functionality., while the log held 0 comments. Whether the reply is true depends on the model, so the reply cannot be the record. build_graph(model_replies_to_rejection=True) keeps that version for the record. The current graph ends a rejected run with a reply built from the decision, and the code host’s own record, the comments table, is the source of truth for what was posted.

A misspelled decision. Resuming with {"action": "approved"} raises ValidationError: Input should be 'approve', 'edit' or 'reject'. Nothing is saved: the thread still waits at human_review with 0 comments posted, and the next valid decision resumes it. Without response_schema, the decision would arrive as a plain dictionary, and the node’s own code would have to reject the typo.

A resume on the wrong thread. The reviewer’s client sends the decision for review-4l5 instead of review-415. Sent straight to invoke, Command(resume=...) does not raise: LangGraph starts a new run on the empty thread, with 0 messages in its state. The agent node sent the model only the system prompt, and the Gemini client refused the request with ValueError: contents are required.. resume() checks get_state(config).interrupts first and raises LookupError: Thread 'review-4l5' has no pending review. instead.

No checkpointer. A graph compiled without one still pauses and returns __interrupt__, so the first half looks right. The resume fails with RuntimeError: Cannot use Command(resume=...) without checkpointer.

A second approval. A reviewer clicks Approve twice. The second resume() on review-415 raised LookupError: Thread 'review-415' has no pending review., and 1 comment stayed posted. With a durable checkpointer such as SqliteSaver, a process that stops after ToolNode posts but before the tools checkpoint is saved resumes from the approved call and runs it again with the same tool call ID. The code host already holds a comment under that ID, so the replay posts nothing. test_a_replay_after_a_restart_posts_nothing runs the same call in two separate Python processes to check this. An earlier version kept the IDs in a Python list; a new process started with an empty list and posted the comment a second time. A real code host needs equivalent atomic idempotency behavior on its side, for example through an idempotency key its API accepts: a check inside your process cannot see a write that an earlier process made.

The offline tests replace Gemini with a scripted chat model, so they need no API key:

Terminal commandsTerminal · bash
python3 -m pytest -v test_graph.py

The suite has 11 tests:

Case Expected behavior
A comment proposal Pauses at human_review with the call as payload; nothing is posted.
Read-only tool calls in a batch with no write Run without a pause.
Approve Posts the proposed comment.
Edit Posts the reviewer’s text; the state keeps one proposal.
Reject Posts nothing; the reply comes from the decision, without a model call.
A misspelled decision Raises ValidationError; the thread still waits and a valid decision resumes it.
A thread with no pending review resume() raises LookupError.
No checkpointer The resume raises RuntimeError.
Resume re-runs the node interrupt() is called twice; the comment is posted once.
The same approved call twice Posts once.
A replay after a restart A new process that runs the same call posts nothing.

Removing the decision schema, the guard in resume(), the route to human_review, the message replacement on edit, the fixed rejection reply or the idempotency check fails at least one test.

Check your understanding

A teammate adds a line to human_review that sends a chat notification, “Review needed”, just above the interrupt() call. A reviewer approves the comment. Count the notifications before you answer.

human_review sends a "Review needed" notification on the line above interrupt(). The reviewer approves once. How many notifications go out?

Choose one answer, then check your reasoning.

Read the explanation

On resume, LangGraph re-runs the interrupted node from the top and interrupt() returns the resume value. Side effects belong after the interrupt or in a later node.

What’s next

Add a long-term memory store keeps what the reviewer teaches the agent across threads.
