Expand explicit seed chunk IDs into bounded neighboring source text. The lab uses the preceding synthetic developer-document index and controlled seed rankings. It performs source lookup and expansion, not a new vector search or a relevance experiment.
When you need this. Use it when a retrieved chunk may be missing a nearby qualifier and you want adjacent source context without crossing into another section or documentation version.
Prerequisites. Use Choose Chunk Boundaries and its paragraph index. A seed is an explicitly supplied chunk selected before expansion. Here the fixture supplies those seeds; no model or retrieval backend chose them during this run.
Validate seeds against the exact index
The program validates the whole chunk index before expansion. It groups chunks by source ID, version, document revision and section identity, then uses source order inside that group. A radius selects nearby chunks within those boundaries; it is not a distance in embedding space.
Stale seed. An unknown or stale ID raises ValueError. A different source revision or boundary configuration cannot be substituted because its chunk IDs differ. Duplicate seeds, malformed seed lists and invalid radii are refused before constructing windows.
The end of a section remains a boundary even when the next chunk in the global index belongs to a nearby heading or another version. Expansion does not grant permission to read a source; this fixture has no authorization layer.
Merge overlaps while keeping seed provenance
Each seed first selects a bounded interval of source-local chunks. Overlapping intervals merge so their text is not repeated as separate overlapping windows. Distinct nonoverlapping intervals remain separate groups. Every resulting window retains its contributing seeds in the original ranking order.
The program slices the original normalized source from the first selected chunk’s start to the last selected chunk’s end. That preserves the text and intervening separators instead of reconstructing a passage from separately trimmed strings.
| Source | Version | Section | Chunks | Contributing seeds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| aster-copy-v1 | 1.0 | Create a copy | 3 | 2 |
Members are marked seed or neighbor. A neighbor has no retrieval rank; it supplies surrounding text. Giving it an invented score would confuse source expansion with candidate retrieval.
Changed window. Validation recomputes the expected expansion from the index, seed IDs and radius. A modified window text, span, member role or seed record is refused. An empty seed list returns no context groups; it does not manufacture a fallback passage.
Execute the source-local expansion
Download the complete lab. It contains the copied index builder, synthetic sources, window implementation, tests and actual result.

}The terminal summary shows two explicit seeds merged into one three-chunk window, with seed, neighbor and seed member roles. No model selects these supplied seeds.
Compare the recorded behavior
Inspect the merged window and its seed records in the raw result. Identify the qualifier recovered as a neighbor, then distinguish it from the explicitly supplied seeds. Explain why the next heading and the other source version remain outside the window even if they are adjacent in the global chunk array.
Read the explanation
A neighbor supplies source context; it is not a newly scored retrieval hit.

The chunk-boundary lab defines the exact input index. Window selection, overlap merging and provenance are explicit application policies implemented here, not behavior attributed to a retrieval framework. The official Python hashlib documentation, checked on 23 October 2026, supplies the digest operations used to bind the saved artifacts.
