A voice callback can check a tool request before execution, but spoken-input checks run after the audio has reached the model. Output checks can also arrive after audio has reached the caller. This lesson tests those boundaries, then checks whether the evaluation grades the spoken transcript or another response field.
The saved input and tool-check runs use gemini-3.1-flash-live-preview. The separate bare-agent output-callback recording uses gemini-2.5-flash-native-audio-preview-12-2025: audio reaches the caller before the callback returns its replacement. You will replay typed and spoken injection attempts and compare the speech evaluation of a bare agent with an agent given the docs. The saved ADK evaluation scored thought text rather than the spoken transcript.
When you need this. A voice docs assistant may hear a request to expose its instruction or call a tool with a path outside the docs. Put checks where they can restrict the relevant action, and inspect the audio and transcript separately: a text replacement in a callback cannot recall audio frames already sent to the caller.
Under Runner.run_live(), callbacks run at different points depending on whether input and output are typed or streamed as audio. For typed turns sent via send_content, before_model_callback runs before the request is sent over the WebSocket. For microphone audio sent via send_realtime, PCM bytes stream directly to the Live API; before_model_callback only sees the turn once the server emits an input_transcription event.

before_model_callback=screen_input, after_model_callback=screen_output, before_tool_callback=guard_page,
)screen_input searches for instruction-disclosure phrases. A typed match returns an LlmResponse before the input reaches the model. Spoken input works differently: ADK forwards the PCM audio to the Live API first, then invokes the callback when the input transcription arrives. Returning an LlmResponse at that point stops the pending model reply; it cannot prevent the model from receiving audio that was already sent.
guard_page rejects tool calls whose name is not in the known page list before read_page executes.
Spoken input assumed unseen by the model. Audio arrived at the Live API before the completed input transcript reached before_model_callback, so typed-input callback ordering does not apply to speech. Check: test_a_spoken_injection_is_checked_only_after_the_model_heard_it.
2. Check what output blocking can still change
screen_output checks quantities in the growing output transcription against the docs text and returns a replacement LlmResponse when a number is absent from the source pages:
[
{
"name": "spoken injection",
"replacements": [
"I can only help with the docs pages."
],
"saved_state": {}
},
{
"name": "output check on the agent without pages",
"replacements": [
"Let me check that against the docs page before I answer."
],
"saved_state": {}
}
]In the bare-agent recording, screen_output returned a replacement asking to check the page, but earlier events had already streamed audio bytes to the caller. In addition, the replacement event was marked partial, so ADK did not persist its state_delta (blocked_claim) to the session.
Output block assumed to retract speech. Audio events preceded the callback’s replacement LlmResponse. Buffer a turn before playback if a whole-turn decision is required, accepting the added latency. Check: test_audio_before_the_block_was_already_played.
A callback state write assumed durable. Because the replacement event was partial, its state_delta was not saved to the session; write audit records to an application log instead of relying on partial-event state deltas. Check: test_state_written_by_the_output_check_is_lost.
A valid fact is worded differently. The regex quantity rule rejected "5 attempts" because the docs page says "5 failed attempts". Replace broad regex rules with checks tied to specific expected facts. Check: test_rewording_trips_the_quantity_check.

}The configuration uses an llm_audio user simulator: one model writes the user turn and a text-to-speech model sends it as audio. The rubric asks for ADK’s expanded name and the microphone sample rate.
These commands make new model requests for the agent, simulated user, speech synthesis and model-based evaluation. Use the offline replay in step 4 to inspect the saved cases without those requests.

rubric_based_multi_turn_trajectory_quality_v1 for bare_voice Failed. Expected 1.0, but got 0.0.
grounded_voice: PASSEDThe bare agent failed both rubric items and the grounded agent passed them in the saved results. Inspecting actual_invocation.final_response shows why you must check the evaluator’s input: the parts in the grounded result are marked thought, and the invocation events contain no output_transcription field. Meanwhile, the tool-using docs_voice evaluation timed out waiting for a model turn and produced no metric scores.
An eval score assumed to grade speech. The saved final_response graded by the rubric was thought text, not output_transcription. Inspect the grader input and retain complete output transcripts for a separate outcome check. Check: test_the_live_eval_judges_thought_text_not_speech.
Tool-agent eval assumed complete. The docs_voice evaluation run timed out and saved no metric results. Verify that every evaluation case produced a score before comparing runs. Check: test_the_tool_agent_eval_produced_no_score.

Ran 11 tests in 0.475s
OKThe tests replay recorded traffic through ADK’s callbacks and parse the saved evaluation JSON to verify delivery order, page refusal, the quantity false positive, partial-state behavior and the grader’s input.
How it works
The callback timing above determines which action can still be stopped.
On the output side, the server streams inline_data audio chunks alongside output_transcription fragments. When after_model_callback returns an LlmResponse replacement, ADK yields that replacement in the event stream, but the client can already have played earlier audio chunks. A client that buffers audio until turn_complete can wait for a whole-turn decision before playback. Only before_tool_callback (guard_page) intercepts execution synchronously before the tool function runs.
What’s next
- Build a custom WebSocket server: connect a client to the stream and handle disconnects and capacity.
Check your understanding
Read the explanation
A callback cannot recall already-delivered audio. A whole-turn playback gate would need client buffering and its own decision.
