Build a memory usefulness eval

Evaluate memory usefulness, stale facts, and storage growth

Measure needed facts, unnecessary memory, stale lines and forgotten content sent with requests. Compare usefulness with recall and storage growth.

Prerequisites

Complete Build a 50-turn memory-compaction benchmark and Compare context-selection strategies: this build reuses their fixture and grading conventions with focused questions.

By the end, you can

  • Define and compute recall, usefulness, stale lines and forgotten lines for a memory block.
  • Explain the trade-off between sending every current fact and sending only matching facts, with recorded numbers.
  • Measure storage growth in rows, and separate history kept on purpose from facts that should have been deleted.
Runtime
Python 3.11+; Ollama only to record new answers
Dependencies
transformers 5.20.1 for the pinned Gemma 4 E2B tokenizer files (no model weights); local gemma4:e2b via Ollama only to record new answers

Problem

When you need this. Retrieving a fact is useful only if the question needs it. Compare the facts sent, the answers they support and the private or outdated details that should stay out of the request.

The memory compaction benchmark asked one question at every checkpoint: summarize the trip. For that question, almost every fact is needed. Real questions are narrower. “What should I eat for dinner?” needs Alice’s diet, not her budget, her travel dates or the colleague who joins on day two.

Sending every current fact keeps recall high and spends tokens on lines the question does not need. Those lines are not harmless: they cost budget that recent conversation could use, and they put unrelated personal details into every request. Sending only matching facts is cheaper and can miss a fact phrased in other words.

This build measures that trade-off, together with the two failures that matter most for memory, stale facts and forgotten facts, and the storage the store uses over time.

Success check: explain why sending every fact raises recall but wastes context, identify stale or forgotten facts that reach answers, and distinguish a missing fact from a faulty answer key.

You need: Python 3.11 or later and the pinned Gemma tokenizer files from the context budget manager build; prepare.py downloads them once, with no account and no model weights. The tests grade recorded model answers and call no model; recording new answers needs Ollama with gemma4:e2b.

Concepts

Four measures for one memory block

The memory block is the list of memory lines sent with a question. Selection adds the separately counted token cost of each line, up to a facts quota of 120, using the pinned Gemma 4 E2B tokenizer. The report calls this sum memory_tokens; it excludes the header, tags and chat template. Count the completed request separately before sending it. Each question lists the facts it needs, the replaced facts it must not use, and the forgotten facts it must not contain.

Measure Definition What a bad value means
Recall Needed facts found in the block, out of needed facts The model cannot see something it needs
Usefulness Lines that contain a needed fact, out of lines sent Tokens and personal details spent on unneeded lines
Stale lines Lines that contain a replaced fact The model may use an outdated fact
Forgotten lines Lines that contain a fact the user asked to forget A broken deletion promise

Usefulness is the memory version of precision in retrieval: of what was sent, how much was needed. Recall and usefulness pull against each other. The two leak counts are not trade-offs; any value above zero is a defect.

Three strategies

managed-all sends every current fact from a managed store, newest first, until the quota is full. managed-relevant sends only current facts that share a word with the question. append-all sends every fact from an append-only store, which never applies a correction or a forget request. The stores are filled from labeled events, so all three start from perfect extraction.

Storage is counted in rows

A managed store does not shrink to the current facts. It keeps superseded versions as history on purpose, and it writes a deletion record for each forget request. An append-only store keeps everything, including facts that should have been deleted. Counting rows by type shows which growth is intended and which is a leak. File sizes are not compared: SQLite allocates whole pages, and the size depends on the SQLite version.

Labelled events populate managed and append-only memory stores. The evaluator constructs each request, checks exact-text fact usefulness and retains stale or forbidden lines as failures. Stored rows, sent context and recorded answers are different outputs.

evaluate.py runs in one process. It fills two SQLite stores from 3 users’ events, asks each user’s questions with each strategy, and grades every block. Then it replays 200 turns of a fourth user’s events into both stores and samples row counts every 20 turns.

The saved evaluation report retains the per-strategy results. managed-all finds 10 of 10 needed facts, but only 10 of its 48 lines are needed: usefulness 20.8%. managed-relevant sends 7 lines with usefulness 85.7% and 91 memory tokens instead of 632, but finds only 6. append-all finds every needed fact and also sends 3 stale lines and 2 forgotten-fact lines.

Working code

Get the files

Download the complete lab, extract it and open a terminal in build-a-memory-usefulness-eval/. It includes the source, fixtures, recorded results and tests listed in the README.

Prepare the local labTerminal · bash
python3.11 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
python prepare.py

prepare.py fetches the pinned tokenizer files once; it does not download model weights. The commands below run local selection code and regrade saved answers without a model server.

"""Write cases.json: three users' memory events with focused questions, and a long replay.

Each conversation lists memory events by turn (what perfect extraction would
store, correct or forget) and questions asked after the last turn. Each
question names the facts it needs and the replaced or forgotten facts it must
not use. The long replay is 200 turns of one user's events, for storage growth.
Run this file to regenerate the fixture; the tests check that it still matches.

Alice’s events are the memory events of the 50-turn benchmark. Bob’s and Chen’s conversations add a correction each and, for Bob, a forget request. Two questions exist only to catch leaks: they ask for the forgotten passport number and the forgotten home address, need no fact, and must receive neither. The long replay adds a fact every 5 turns, changes the budget every 20 and forgets a note every 50.

The evaluation

"""Evaluate what memory sends: recall, usefulness, stale and forgotten facts, and storage growth.

Three ways to fill the memory block of a request, under one facts quota:

managed-all every current fact from a managed store, newest first
managed-relevant current facts that share words with the question
append-all every fact from an append-only store, newest first

The stores are filled from labeled events, which act as perfect extraction:
the managed store applies corrections and forget requests; the append-only
store keeps every fact and ignores both.
Lines are counted with the pinned Gemma 4 E2B tokenizer. The run is
deterministic: one trial. Storage is measured in rows; file sizes depend on the
SQLite version and are reported separately.

apply is the same labeled-event step as in the benchmark. lines adds separately counted line costs within the quota and skips a line that does not fit. grade counts lines by what they contain. summarize adds them up per strategy; usefulness is undefined when nothing was sent. counts reads row counts by type for one user.

Read the misses

managed-relevant misses facts in 4 questions:

QuestionMissed fact
When do we travel to Porto?10 to 13 November
Which operating system should the laptop setup guide cover?macOS
Who approves my desk order?manager is Priya
Order snacks for the team meeting.allergic to peanuts

Each miss is a fact that shares no word with its question, and a test checks exactly that. “Order snacks for the team meeting.” needs Chen’s peanut allergy; nothing in the question says food or allergy. A word-overlap rule cannot connect them, and an embedding search may or may not. The leak questions show the other side: for the passport and the address, both strategies that apply forget requests send an empty block, which is the right result.

Storage over time

After 200 turns, the managed store holds 33 rows for the replay user: 25 current facts, 8 superseded versions kept as history, and 4 deletion records in a separate table. The append-only store holds 37 rows, all of them current, including the forgotten notes. The managed store’s history grows by one row per correction, so a frequently corrected fact accumulates history; an archive policy for old versions is the next step for long-lived users.

Interpret the recorded answers

The measures above grade the selected lines by text. The saved recording was made with answer_check.py record, which sends every question with each strategy’s block to gemma4:e2b, the Gemma 4 E2B model under the Apache 2.0 license, through a local Ollama server pinned by digest, 5 seeds each: 150 answers. The block uses the <memories> format of the retrieval build. Grading keys were written from the cases’ required, stale and forgotten facts before any answer was recorded. An answer passes with every required fact, no replaced fact stated as current and no forgotten fact, fails otherwise, and is incomplete if there is no answer, the labels from the evaluation foundations. A leak question passes when the answer leaks nothing.

"""Send each question with each strategy's memory block to the pinned Gemma 4 E2B model.

python answer_check.py record # needs Ollama with gemma4:e2b and the pinned tokenizer
python answer_check.py # offline: grades the recorded answers again

The memory blocks are the lines evaluate.py selects, inside the same
<memories> block format as the retrieval build. Each request is sent with
five seeds. KEYS, written from the cases' required, stale and forgotten facts
before any answer was recorded:

incomplete no answer to grade
fail a forgotten fact appears, a replaced fact is stated as current, or a
            required fact is missing
pass every required fact, no replaced fact stated as current, and no
            forgotten fact

A question with no required fact passes when the answer leaks nothing. One
hundred fifty answers from a small model illustrate how the three blocks
behave; they are not a measure of answer quality.

The table below preserves the original grader output. Its desk question expects the name Priya, but Bob only says she is his manager; none of his notes says who approves a desk order. All 15 saved desk answers say the approval information is missing. Those refusals are supported by the notes and must not be counted as demonstrated model failures. The fact-recall labels for that question have the same unsupported assumption.

Run python3 answer_check.py to reproduce this historical grading offline. Repair the approval policy in a new case before using it to compare models; do not add that policy to the old recording.

The supported cases show three ways a memory block can affect an answer:

  • Leaks reach the answer. With append-all, every answer to the passport question gave the forgotten number, and every answer to the database and laptop questions gave the replaced value, PostgreSQL and Linux, although the correction was in the same block. A stale or forgotten line is not only a wasted token: the model used it.
  • Missing lines cost answers. managed-relevant failed every answer to the laptop and snacks questions, whose blocks were empty, and the model asked for notes it did not have.
  • A fact in the block is not a fact in the answer. All three strategies missed the travel dates in every saved answer, although managed-all sent the updated dates. The answers named Porto but omitted the moved dates. This is a supported example of retained information not reaching the answer; the desk-approval case is not.

150 answers from one small model illustrate these failures; they are not a measure of answer quality.

Check your understanding

managed-all reaches full recall on this set. Why might you still choose managed-relevant, and what would you change first? Compare your answer with this one: managed-all spends 632 memory tokens where managed-relevant spends 91, and it sends personal facts with every question, needed or not. A first change is to give facts attributes that questions can be mapped to, then re-run this evaluation and compare every measure with the recording.

managed-relevant had much higher usefulness than managed-all. Why is it not simply the better block?

Choose one answer, then check your reasoning.

Read the explanation

Report recall and usefulness together. Each can look good alone while the other fails.

Failure cases

Run the tests:

Terminal commandsTerminal · bash
python3 -m unittest -v test_evaluate.py test_answer_check.py

The suite has 17 tests. The first compares a fresh run with the recording, apart from the environment block, and another grades the recorded answers again. The evaluation tests run the evaluation in the test process; the answer tests grade fixed answers and call no model:

Case Expected behavior
The fixture drifts from its generator The stored cases must equal the generator’s output.
A question lists a fact the user never said Every listed fact occurs in that user’s events.
A replaced or forgotten fact reaches a managed block Never; both managed strategies send zero stale and zero forgotten lines.
Memory never applies corrections or forget requests Append-only sends stale lines and leaks the forgotten passport number.
Sending only matching facts Higher usefulness and fewer tokens, lower recall.
A matching rule misses a fact Every miss is a fact that shares no word with its question.
Selected-line costs larger than the quota The sum of separately counted line costs stays within the quota; the complete request needs its own count.
History and deletions in the managed store Current facts are fewer than stored rows; history only grows; one deletion record per forget request.
A forgotten note after the replay Its text is not stored in the managed store.
An answer that gives a forgotten fact Grade it fail; an answer that leaks nothing passes.
An answer that states the replaced database as current Grade it fail; an answer that marks it as replaced passes.
An answer without the required fact Grade it fail and name the missing fact.
An answer model that is not the pinned build Refuse before sending any request.

To check that the tests catch real defects, we changed the evaluation one rule at a time. Ignoring forget requests in the managed store fails four tests. Ignoring the quota fails the quota test for the four blocks that then exceed it. Letting the matching strategy send facts with no shared word fails the trade-off test. We also removed a consolidation step that an earlier draft ran; no test changed, because this case set has no duplicates or unlinked conflicts, so the step was removed rather than kept as untested code.

Deployment

Run it with every memory change

Run the evaluation whenever extraction, retrieval, quotas or deletion change, and keep evaluation-result.json under version control. Block a change that sends any stale or forgotten line. For recall and usefulness, review the per-question rows: a total that stays flat can hide one question that broke.

In production, you do not know which facts a question needs, so recall and usefulness need labeled samples. Log, per request, the memory IDs sent and the tokens they cost, without memory text. Sample requests, label which memory lines were needed, and compute the same measures on the sample.

Track storage per user in rows by type, as counts does, and alert on growth in current facts or deletion requests that leave rows behind. The recorded environment block names the SQLite version, because file sizes depend on it. Answers were recorded once from gemma4:e2b through Ollama 0.32.14. No server deployment was made. The tests pass on Python 3.11, the version of the tokenizer environment.

Scaling

What the numbers can support

10 questions over 3 synthetic users show the shape of the trade-off and the leaks. All of them are development cases: they were written together with the strategies and graders, so no held-out evaluation was run. They cannot rank strategies for your users or estimate a recall figure you can rely on. Grow the question set from real requests, keep a held-out set you do not tune on, and report per-question results with the totals.

The evaluation’s own cost is small: one store write per event, and one block per question and strategy, with a tokenizer call per candidate line. The answer check adds one model call per question, strategy and seed, so its cost grows with the number of questions times strategies times trials.

Key takeaways

  • Measure memory by what it sends: recall, usefulness, stale lines and forgotten lines.
  • Sending every current fact maximizes recall and wastes tokens; matching facts saves tokens and misses paraphrases.
  • Stale and forgotten lines are defects, not trade-offs; append-only memory produces both.
  • Count storage by row type to separate intended history from leaks.
  • Grade answers as well as blocks: a model repeats stale and forgotten lines it receives, and can miss a fact the block holds.

Best practices

  • Add questions whose correct memory block is empty, to catch deletion leaks.
  • Check that the notes support the answer, not only that every keyword occurs somewhere. A manager relationship does not establish an approval policy.
  • Exclude machine-dependent values, such as file sizes, from recorded comparisons.
  • Remove code that a test shows has no effect, rather than keeping it untested.
