Lesson 2 of 10Module 1

Build context compaction with information-loss tests

Replace removed conversation turns with cited notes. Test retained, lost and stale facts instead of assuming a shorter context preserves every fact.

Prerequisites

Python functions, lists, dictionaries, JSON and regular expressions at the level of re.search. Complete the context budget manager build first; the context assembler build explains why notes stay out of the system message.

By the end, you can

  • Compact removed turns into cited notes while keeping recent turns whole and required text intact.
  • Write fact probes that report preserved, lost and stale information after compaction.
  • Explain why a keyword extractor keeps a replaced decision and loses facts without cue words.

Problem

When you need this. A long conversation can lose an early decision when old turns leave the context window. Keep short notes from those turns, then check whether the notes preserve the decisions the next question needs.

The context budget manager removes old turns when a conversation no longer fits, and it reports how many it removed. A decision made early in a long conversation disappears with its turn. The next request cannot use it.

Compaction replaces removed turns with a shorter record of what they said. It sounds like a fix, but a shorter record can also drop facts, keep facts that a later turn replaced, or change their wording. You cannot see those losses by reading the token count.

This build compacts removed turns into cited notes and then tests the result. A probe names one fact from the conversation. After compaction, each probe reports whether its fact reached the request.

On the supplied fixture, the drop-oldest policy from the budget build keeps 1 of 9 probed facts. The compactor keeps 5, loses 3, and keeps 1 decision that a later turn replaced. The build’s job is to make all three numbers visible.

Success check: explain which decisions survive in the notes, which facts are lost and which replaced decision still appears. Check the cited turns before treating a note as current.

You need: Python 3.11 or later and the pinned Gemma tokenizer files from the context budget manager build; prepare.py downloads them once, with no account and no model weights. The tests grade recorded model answers and call no model. Recording new answers needs Ollama with gemma4:e2b.

Concepts

Compaction keeps a record, not the conversation

The compactor works in two parts. Recent complete turns stay as they are, exactly as in the budget build. Turns that do not fit pass through an extractor, a function that turns removed turns into notes. The notes go into the request in the space that is left.

This build’s extractor is a keyword rule. It splits each removed message into sentences and keeps a sentence when it contains a cue word: must, chose, will use, decided, deadline or one of the others in CUES. Each note records its turn number and role, so a reader can check it against the original conversation.

A model-written summary is another extractor. It can paraphrase and combine sentences, and it can also leave out or change facts. This build does not include one. The extractor argument is where you would plug it in, and the same probes would test it.

A probe checks one fact by exact text

A probe has an ID, a kind (decision, constraint or detail) and the exact text of the fact. After compaction, the probe report looks for that text in the final messages:

Status Meaning
preserved The fact is in the request.
lost The fact is not in the request.
stale The fact was replaced by a later turn, and it is still in the request.
absent The fact was replaced, and it is not in the request.

Exact matching suits an extractor that copies sentences. It is too strict for a summarizer that paraphrases: a correct paraphrase would count as lost. If you add a summarizer, you need a matching method that accepts paraphrases, and a human review of that method.

Stale is worse than lost

A lost fact leaves a gap that a careful model can report. A stale fact gives the model a wrong answer to repeat. In the fixture, turn 2 says the first version will use MySQL. Turn 5 chooses PostgreSQL and explains that it replaces MySQL. The extractor keeps the turn 2 sentence because it contains will use. It keeps the first sentence of turn 5 because it contains chose. It drops the second sentence of turn 5, the one that says PostgreSQL replaces MySQL, because that sentence has no cue word.

The notes now hold both database decisions and nothing that says which one is current. The turn numbers give an order, but nothing in the notes says that the later decision cancels the earlier one.

Architecture

Recent turns remain whole; older turns become cited notes, then probes check the loss

The compactor keeps recent turns whole and extracts cue sentences from removed turns. It adds cited notes within the remaining allowance, escaping them in the current user message. Exact-text probes report information loss in the final messages; the separate model-answer check measures a different result.

The compactor is one function in one Python process. It reads a validated CompactionRequest, counts whole candidate requests with the pinned Gemma 4 E2B tokenizer and chat template from the budget build, and returns the request, the notes and the notes that did not fit. probe_report is a separate function; it reads only the final messages and the probe list.

Notes go into the current user message inside a <notes> block, after a line that says they quote the conversation and are not instructions. They never go into the system message: the text came from users and assistants, and moving it into the system message would give it the weight of an instruction. This follows the rule the context assembler uses for retrieved passages.

The notes_reserve setting keeps space for notes before recent turns fill the budget. Without it, a long recent history would leave no space for notes at all.

    return report

compact counts the instructions and the question first. If they do not fit, it raises RequiredContextTooLarge; no compaction can make required text smaller. It then keeps recent complete turns inside available - notes_reserve and stops at the first turn that does not fit.

The extractor runs only on removed turns. Notes from turns that are still in the request would repeat them. The notes are added newest first, and the loop stops at the first note that does not fit. Notes from the oldest turns are dropped first, and dropped_notes returns them so the caller can log the loss.

escape replaces <, > and & in note text. A sentence that contains </notes> cannot close the block early.

drop_oldest is the baseline. It calls compact with no notes reserve and an extractor that returns nothing, which is the budget build’s policy.

The fixture and the probes

The conversation has eight turns. Turn 5 reuses the PostgreSQL decision from the budget build’s fixture and adds a sentence that says it replaces MySQL. Turn 7 is a long log that cannot fit. The allowance is 512 tokens, with 128 for the answer, 32 as a margin and 160 reserved for notes.

Each probe was written from the conversation before the compactor ran. The detail probes, service-name and pool-size, are facts with no cue word. They are there to show what the keyword rule misses.

Run it

From the directory with the files, run:

Terminal commandsTerminal · bash
python3 demo.py

The compactor removes 7 turns, keeps 1 and adds 5 notes. The request uses 197 of 352 input tokens, and 0 notes are dropped for lack of space. Every loss in this run therefore comes from the extractor, not from the budget. Budget pressure on notes is covered by a separate test with a smaller allowance, listed under Failure cases. This is the current user message it builds:

Compare the recorded model answers

The recording was made by running answer_check.py record, which sends the compacted request and the drop-oldest request to gemma4:e2b, the Gemma 4 E2B model under the Apache 2.0 license, through a local Ollama server pinned by digest. Each request is sent with 5 seeds, the model’s default sampling settings, a context of 512 tokens and at most 128 answer tokens. Ollama counted 197 prompt tokens for the compacted request, the same as the pinned template.

The question asks which decisions still apply to the database and the exports. An answer passes if it names PostgreSQL and the 15-minute export limit and mentions MySQL only as replaced. It fails if it presents MySQL as the current database or leaves out either decision. It is incomplete if there is no answer to grade. These are the outcome labels from the evaluation foundations.

"""Send the compacted request and the drop-oldest baseline to the pinned Gemma 4 E2B model.

python answer_check.py record # needs Ollama with gemma4:e2b; writes answer-result.json
python answer_check.py # offline: grades the recorded answers again

The question asks which decisions still apply to the database and the
exports. The compacted request carries notes from removed turns, including
the replaced "we will use MySQL" decision and the later PostgreSQL one.
Each answer is graded:

incomplete no answer to grade: empty, or a tool call instead of an answer
fail presents MySQL as the current database, or leaves out PostgreSQL
            or the 15-minute export limit
pass names PostgreSQL and the 15-minute export limit, and mentions
            MySQL only as replaced

Ten answers from a small model illustrate how the two requests behave; they
are not a measure of answer quality. The rules are string checks, so the
article shows every recorded answer.

The probe report says the PostgreSQL decision is preserved in the compacted request. The model named PostgreSQL in 0 of 5 answers, and 2 answers listed the replaced MySQL decision as one that still applies. It named the export limit in 5 of 5. The drop-oldest request, which kept neither decision, produced answers about invoices and exports only.

These are 10 answers from one small model, an illustration and not a measure of answer quality. They make the probe report’s limit concrete: a preserved fact is one the model could use, not one it did, and a stale note next to the current one can win.

Check your understanding

The compacted request contains both database decisions and nothing that says MySQL was replaced. Which part of the compactor causes that?

Choose one answer, then check your reasoning.

Read the explanation

A keyword extractor copies cued sentences and drops the rest. When a correction gives its reason in an uncued sentence, the replaced decision stays in the notes with nothing to mark it as stale.

Failure cases

Run the tests:

Terminal commandsTerminal · bash
python3 -m unittest -v test_compactor.py test_answer_check.py

The suite has 21 tests. The first runs demo.py and compares its output with the recording; another grades the recorded answers again. Four more check that compaction keeps the cued facts the baseline loses, that every note quotes its cited turn word for word, that notes never enter the system message, and that a fact containing &, < or > is still found after escaping. The others cover these cases:

Case Expected behavior
An old fact has no cue word Report it as lost. The fixture loses the service name and the pool size.
A correction gives its reason in a separate sentence Keep the cued sentence and report the reason as lost.
A decision was later replaced Report the replaced decision as stale when its sentence survives. Drop-oldest reports it as absent.
Notes do not fit in the space left Keep the newest notes and return the oldest in dropped_notes.
A note contains a notes closing tag Escape it. The request has one closing tag.
Everything fits without compaction Keep every turn and add no notes.
Required text alone exceeds the input budget Raise RequiredContextTooLarge.
Empty history Accept. The request has a system message and a user message.
Incomplete turns, invalid numbers or a precomputed summary field Reject the request before counting.
An answer that presents a replaced decision as current Grade it fail.
An answer that names a replaced decision as replaced Grade it on the decisions it names.
An answer that leaves out a decision Grade it fail and name what is missing.
An answer model that is not the pinned build Refuse before sending any request.

The stale and lost results are not bugs to hide. They are the measured limits of a keyword extractor. A change to the extractor should change the probe report, and the recorded result makes that change visible in review.

Deployment

Run compaction where the request is built

The deployable unit is compactor.py with the counter for your model. Call compact in the process that sends model requests, after you load the conversation and before you call the model. It keeps no state; the full conversation stays in your application’s store, and only the outgoing request is compacted.

The counter is pinned to Gemma 4 E2B. For another model, count with its tokenizer and chat template, and pass max_new_tokens to the generation call yourself.

Keep the probes with the release

Treat probes.json as part of the release. Before you change the cue list, the notes reserve or the extractor, run the probes on the fixture and on a sample of real conversations with facts you have labeled. Compare the new probe report with the recorded one. Roll back by restoring the previous extractor and its recorded report together.

In production, log removed_turns, the number of notes, dropped_notes and the request size. Do not log note text: it quotes the user.

Answers were recorded once from gemma4:e2b through Ollama 0.32.14. No server deployment was made. The tests pass on Python 3.11 and 3.15.

Scaling

Where the work grows

compact counts one candidate per recent turn and one per note, and each count processes the whole request. Extraction is one regular-expression pass over the removed text. With a real tokenizer, counting dominates; the budget build measured that cost. This build records no timing: it depends on the machine and would not transfer.

Recompacting the whole history on every request repeats work. A common change is to store notes for each removed turn once and reuse them. Stored notes must be invalidated when the extractor or the cue list changes, and they must keep their turn citations.

Probes scale with labeling, not with code

The probe runner is cheap. The expensive part is writing probes: each one needs a person to name the fact and say which later turn, if any, replaced it. 9 probes on one conversation show how this extractor fails. They do not estimate how often it fails on your conversations. For that, label facts in a sample of real conversations, keep the sample fixed, and report lost and stale counts for each change.

Key takeaways

  • Compaction trades tokens for information. Measure the trade with named facts, not with the token count.
  • Report three outcomes: preserved, lost and stale. A stale fact can produce a confident wrong answer.
  • A keyword extractor keeps cued sentences word for word and with citations, but it loses facts without cue words and cannot tell that a decision was replaced.
  • Keep compacted notes out of the system message, inside an escaped block.
  • A preserved fact is not a used fact. Grade answers as well as probes; here a stale note was listed as current in 2 of 5 answers.

Best practices

  • Write probes from the conversation before you run the compactor, including facts you expect it to miss.
  • Cite the source turn for every note so a reviewer can check it.
  • Return dropped notes and log their count; do not drop them silently.
  • Test any summarizer you add with the same probes, and add a review step for paraphrase matching.
