Lesson 3 of 10Module 1

Build isolated contexts for users, tasks, and agents

Scope context to the requesting app, user, task or agent. Compare a leaking shared list with a scoped store and test restricted worker handoffs.

Prerequisites

Python classes, dictionaries and JSON. Complete the context assembler build first: it explains why stored text goes into the user message as data. Know that authentication is a separate step that identifies the user.

By the end, you can

  • Assign each context item a scope and derive its visibility from the user, task and agent of the request.
  • Hand a sub-agent an explicit brief and chosen items instead of the parent's full context.
  • Test cross-user, cross-task, cache and deletion boundaries, and state what scoping does not cover.

Problem

When you need this. Two users ask the same question, but their answers depend on different private notes. Filter context by the requesting user, task and agent before ranking or caching it.

An assistant that remembers things keeps them somewhere: user preferences, notes for the current task, an agent’s working drafts. When the application builds the next request, it selects items from that store. If the store is one shared list, the selection decides what each user sees.

A shared list fails in a quiet way. Bob asks about the export job. A word-overlap ranking returns the three items that share the most words with the question, and one of them belongs to Alice. In this build’s fixture, the naive baseline returns at least one other user’s item in all 5 recorded queries. Nothing crashes; the request just contains data Bob must never see.

Agents add two more boundaries. A task’s notes should not follow the user into a different task. A sub-agent that searches documentation does not need the planner’s drafts or the user’s preferences, and it should not get the planner’s tools.

We will build a scoped context store. Every item has a scope, the requester is a (user, task, agent) principal, and the store returns only the items that principal may read. A sub-agent gets an explicit handoff. The tests check each boundary and show the baseline’s leaks.

Success check: in the recorded scenario, no principal receives another user’s item, a new task does not see the previous task’s notes, and the researcher receives only the handoff.

You need: Python 3.11 or later and a terminal. The build uses only the standard library and keeps everything in memory. The tests grade recorded model answers and call no model; recording new answers needs Ollama with gemma4:e2b.

Concepts

Four scopes

A scope says who may read an item. This build uses four:

Scope Who may read it Example in the fixture
app Every principal. Written only from configuration. The answer policy
user The same user, in any task Bob prefers short answers.
task The same user in the same task Task 17: move the export job to PostgreSQL.
agent The same user, task and agent The planner’s draft question

A principal is the requester: one user, one task and one agent. The store compares an item’s scope keys with the principal’s. A task item matches only when both the user and the task match, so the check never relies on task IDs being unique across users.

Scope keys come from the principal

When the planner writes an item, the store fills the item’s user, task and agent from the principal. The caller cannot supply them. A note whose text says user_id: alice is still Bob’s note. This rule is what makes the other rules hold: if a caller could set an item’s owner, the read check would protect nothing.

Principals cannot write app items. Application policy comes from configuration, so a user cannot add an instruction that every other user would receive.

Agents read declared scopes and get declared tools

Each agent declares the scopes it reads and the tools it receives. The fixture’s planner reads all four scopes and gets search_docs and delegate. The researcher reads only app and its own agent scope, and gets only search_docs. OWASP LLM06:2025 recommends limiting the tools an agent can call to the minimum necessary.

The store enforces one tool rule itself: only an agent with the delegate tool can call handoff. For every other tool, build_context returns the agent’s tool list, and the application that executes tool calls must refuse any call to a tool that is not on that list. This build does not execute tools, so it does not enforce that part.

A handoff is an explicit copy

The planner does not share its context with the researcher. It calls handoff with a brief and a list of item IDs. The store checks that the planner has the delegate tool and can read each item, then copies the brief and the items into the researcher’s agent scope, with their source recorded. The researcher sees what it was given and nothing else.

A handoff is all or nothing. The store validates every copy before it writes any, so a failed handoff leaves the store and its version unchanged. Each handoff gets the next number for that user, and its items are named handoff-<n>-brief and handoff-<n>-item-<k>, so a second handoff in the same task does not collide with the first. Caller-written IDs cannot start with handoff-, so a written item can never take a number a later handoff needs.

Architecture

Scope filtering happens before request construction; cache entries include identity and version
Trusted caller identityuser, task and agentWrite or hand offderive scope keys from principalhandoff validates every selected itemthen copies into receiver agent scopeContextStorein memory; scoped itemsmutations increase store versionitemsFilter by scope and agent.readsapp: shared; user: same usertask: same user and taskagent: same user, task and agentBuild the requestapp items + role → system messagescoped items → user textonly the configured agent toolsprincipal+ questionScopeErrorunknown agentScoped requestmessages, tools and item IDsCache entryprincipal + question+ store versionreuse constructed requestTrusted caller identityuser, task and agentWrite or hand offscope keys from principalvalidate all handoff items firstcopy into receiver agent scopeContextStorein-memory scoped itemsmutations increase store versionFilter scope + agent.readsapp: shared; user: same usertask: same user and taskagent: same user, task and agentScopeErrorunknown agentBuild the requestapp + role in system messageescaped scoped items in user textconfigured tools and item IDsScoped requestmessages, tools and item IDsCache entrykey: principal, question, store version
The trusted principal supplies the scope keys. Handoffs validate selected readable items before copying them into the receiver’s agent scope. Request construction includes only scopes allowed by the agent configuration and principal. The cache key includes the principal, question and store version; it reuses requests, not model answers.

The store is one in-memory object in one Python process. write, configure, handoff and close_task change it; each change increases its version. visible filters items for a principal. build_context turns the visible items into a request: app items and the agent’s role go into the system message, and the other items go into the user message inside escaped <item> blocks.

The saved isolation-result.json and answer-grades.json retain the fixture outcomes. Every query asks the same question, so differences come from scope rules, not from the question. After close_task, Bob’s task 17 has only the app policy and his user preference left. The naive list still returns Alice’s items.

ContextCache reuses a built context only for the same principal, question and store version. A cache keyed only by the question would return Bob’s context to Alice.

The read rule has two parts. Item.visible_to compares scope keys: it returns early for app items, then requires a matching user, then a matching task, then a matching agent. Each check narrows the previous one. ContextStore.visible then keeps only the scopes the requesting agent declares in reads, which is how the researcher is kept away from user and task items.

Principal and Agent validate themselves when they are created. IDs must be lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, so a blank or None user cannot become a wildcard. An agent must read its own agent scope; otherwise a handoff would be invisible to it.

write checks item IDs for duplicates only among app items and the writer’s own items. A global check would answer “duplicate” when another user already has that ID, which tells the writer that the other user’s item exists.

naive_context is the baseline: it ranks every item in the store by words shared with the question and takes the top three.

The scenario has two users, three tasks and two agents. Bob’s planner writes a user preference, a task plan and a draft, then hands the plan to the researcher. Five queries follow, with a close_task before the last one. For every query, demo.py records the scoped request and the request the naive list would build, rendered the same way, so the answer check below can send both.

The researcher receives the app policy, the brief and its copy of the plan. It does not receive Bob’s preference or the planner’s draft. Its tools are only search_docs. Closing task 17 removed 4 items: the plan, the draft, the brief and the copied plan.

Compare the recorded model answers

The store tests show which items each request holds. The saved answers show what the model did when another user’s item is among them. Bob and Alice each ask “What is the plan for the export job?” with their scoped request and with the naive one, 5 seeds each, sent to gemma4:e2b, the Gemma 4 E2B model under the Apache 2.0 license, through a local Ollama server pinned by digest.

An answer passes if it states the user’s own plan and nothing from the other user. It fails if it mentions the other user’s data or leaves out the user’s own plan. It is incomplete if there is no answer to grade. These are the outcome labels from the evaluation foundations.

"""Send scoped and naive contexts to the pinned Gemma 4 E2B model and check for leaks.

python answer_check.py record # needs Ollama with gemma4:e2b; writes answer-result.json
python answer_check.py # offline: grades the recorded answers again

Bob and Alice each ask "What is the plan for the export job?". Their scoped
context holds only their own items; the naive baseline's global list mixes
in the other user's item. Each request is sent with five seeds and graded:

incomplete no answer to grade: empty, or a tool call instead of an answer
fail mentions the other user's data, or leaves out the user's own plan
pass states the user's own plan and nothing from the other user

Twenty answers from a small model illustrate what reaches an answer once
another user's item is in the context; they are not a measure of answer
quality. The rules are string checks, so the article shows every answer.

With her naive request, Alice received Bob’s plan as her own in 5 of 5 answers, for example: “The plan for the export job is to move the export job to PostgreSQL.” With her scoped request, 0 answers mentioned Bob’s data. Bob’s naive request also held Alice’s item, yet 0 of his answers mentioned it.

These are 20 answers from one small model, an illustration and not a measure of answer quality. They show the consequence the store tests guard against: once another user’s item is in the request, the model can present it as the requester’s own.

Check your understanding

Bob's naive request held one of Alice's items, but none of Bob's five recorded answers mentioned it. What should you conclude?

Choose one answer, then check your reasoning.

Read the explanation

Isolation is a property of what the store returns. Model answers are a symptom check, and a clean answer does not prove a clean request.

Failure cases

Run the tests:

Terminal commandsTerminal · bash
python3 -m unittest -v test_isolation.py test_answer_check.py

The suite has 23 tests. The first runs demo.py and compares its output with the recording; another grades the recorded answers again. The others cover these cases:

Case Expected behavior
Another user’s item matches the question The scoped store never returns it. The naive list returns it in every recorded query.
The same user starts a new task The new task sees app and user items only.
One agent’s scratch notes Other agents in the same task cannot read them.
A sub-agent needs part of the parent’s context It receives the brief and the chosen items, and only its own tools.
A handoff names an item the sender cannot read Reject the handoff.
A handoff fails partway Validate every copy first; a failed handoff writes nothing and leaves the version unchanged.
A second handoff in the same task Number it; its items do not collide with the first handoff’s.
An agent without the delegate tool hands off Reject the handoff.
A caller writes an ID that starts with handoff- Reject the write; that prefix is reserved for handoffs.
Item text or a payload claims another user’s scope Take scope keys from the principal. Reject writes to the app scope.
An item ID that another user already uses Accept it. Only the writer’s own duplicate is rejected.
A task is closed Remove its task and agent items. Other users’ items remain.
A cached context for another principal or an older store Miss the cache and build a new context.
Item text contains an item closing tag Escape it. The number of closing tags equals the number of scoped items.
Invalid principals and unknown agents Reject blank, uppercase, None or space-containing IDs and unconfigured agents.
An answer that mentions another user’s data Grade it fail.
An answer that states only the user’s own plan Grade it pass.
An answer without the user’s own plan, or no answer Grade it fail, or incomplete when there is nothing to grade.
An answer model that is not the pinned build Refuse before sending any request.

To check that the tests catch real defects, we removed parts of the rules one at a time. Without the task check, the task-boundary test and the fixture test fail. With a cache key that ignores the principal, the cache test fails. Without escaping, the closing-tag test fails. When write stores no user key, almost every test fails.

The store tests check what each request holds; the answer tests check the grading rules on recorded answers. Isolation cannot protect data that was written into the wrong scope.

Deployment

From memory to a real store

The deployable logic is Item.visible_to, the write rule and the handoff. The in-memory list is for the lesson. In a real application, store items in a database table with scope, user_id, task_id and agent_id columns, and put the scope conditions in every query that reads items. Filtering after a broad query works too, but a missing filter then leaks every row.

Build the principal from your authenticated session, never from request fields that a client controls. Give each agent its tool list and readable scopes from configuration.

Deletion, logs and rollback

close_task deletes task and agent items in memory. A real store must also delete or invalidate cached contexts, search indexes and copies made by handoffs. Test deletion end to end: write an item, close the task, then search every place the item could appear.

Log principal IDs, item IDs and counts of visible items. Do not log item text. To roll back a scope-rule change, restore the previous code and run the scenario test before you switch; a change in visible_items is a behavior change.

Answers were recorded once from gemma4:e2b through Ollama 0.32.14. No database or server deployment was made. The tests pass on Python 3.11 and 3.15.

Scaling

Where the work grows

visible scans every item in the store, so each request costs time in proportion to the total number of items. That is acceptable for a lesson and wrong for a shared service. A database index on (user_id, task_id, agent_id) lets each query read only the principal’s rows. This build records no timing; measure with your store and your item counts.

The cache keys on the store version, which changes on every write by any user. With many users, Bob’s cache would miss whenever Alice writes. A per-principal version, increased only by writes that principal can read, keeps hits without crossing users. Test it with the same cross-user cache case.

More agents and more tasks

Handoffs copy items, so storage grows with the number of handoffs. Copies are simple to reason about, and deleting a task removes them. If copies become too large, store references instead, and check at read time that the receiver may still read each referenced item.

Key takeaways

  • Give every context item a scope and derive its visibility from the requesting user, task and agent.
  • Take scope keys from the principal, never from the payload or the text.
  • Hand a sub-agent a brief and chosen items, and give it only the tools it needs.
  • Key caches and deletion by scope too; a leak through a cache is still a leak.
  • Once another user’s item is in the request, a model can present it as the requester’s own, as Alice’s recorded answers did.

Best practices

  • Authenticate before you build a principal, and check document permissions before content is written into a scope.
  • Write a cross-user test for every read path: direct reads, caches, search and handoffs.
  • Make duplicate checks and error messages per user, so errors do not reveal other users’ data.
  • Keep scope conditions in the database query, not only in application code after the query.
