Problem
When you need this. An assistant booking a hotel needs the current trip’s budget, the user’s preferences and an earlier booking. A single word-match ranking can miss the trip details, so give each kind of memory its own selection rule.
The memory store now keeps facts with their sources, replaces corrected facts and forgets what it is asked to forget. Recall is still one ranking: every current memory is scored by the words it shares with the question, and the top few win.
That ranking treats very different memories as one list. Alice asks: “Find a hotel in Porto like the one we booked last time.” To answer well, the assistant needs the dates and budget of this trip, Alice’s preference for a hotel near a river, and what happened on the last booking. The dates and budget share no words with the question. In this build’s recording, the pooled ranking returns 4 memories and misses both of them.
The memories differ in kind, and each kind needs a different rule. This build stores a kind with every memory and retrieves each kind into its own section of the request, with its own token quota.
Success check: for both recorded questions, per-kind retrieval puts every required fact into the request, the selected-line costs stay within each section quota, and no corrected fact appears.
You need: Python 3.11 or later and the pinned Gemma tokenizer files from the context budget manager build; prepare.py downloads them once, with no account and no model weights. There are no embeddings in this build. The tests grade recorded model answers and call no model; recording new answers needs Ollama with gemma4:e2b.
Concepts
Three kinds of memory
The terms come from cognitive science. Cognitive Architectures for Language Agents (Sumers, Yao, Narasimhan and Griffiths) applies them to language agents. Its section 4.1 describes working memory as the information active for the current decision, episodic memory as experience from earlier decisions, and semantic memory as knowledge about the world and the agent itself. This build uses them as follows:
| Kind | In this build | Example from the fixture | Extra data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Working | The current task’s state | Budget: 150 euros per night. | Task level only |
| Semantic | Facts about the user | Alice prefers a hotel near a river. | Corrections and expiry from the previous build |
| Episodic | Past events | Booked the Lisbon hotel near the river; the first card was declined and the second worked. | The date it happened, occurred_at |
The paper also describes procedural memory, knowledge of how to act. In an application, procedural memory lives in code and prompts, not in this store.
Each kind needs its own rule
Working memory is the state of the task in progress. It is needed whether or not the question mentions it, so it has no relevance filter. Newer notes replace the meaning of older ones, so the section takes the newest first and stops at the first note that does not fit, like conversation history in the context budget manager.
Semantic memory holds facts. The fact that matters is the one that matches the question, so facts are ranked by shared words, with the newer fact first on a tie. Facts are independent, so one that does not fit is skipped and a smaller one may still fit.
Episodic memory holds events. The question “like the one we booked last time” asks about the most recent matching event, so episodes are ranked by shared words and then by the date they happened. A memory written today about an event in August still counts as an August event.
Separate quotas
Each section has its own token budget, a quota. Without quotas, a long run of episodes could fill the request and push out the task’s dates. The quotas in this build (working 48, semantic 40, episodic 70) are settings for this fixture. The code counts each line separately with the pinned Gemma 4 E2B tokenizer and adds those costs. This selected-line token cost excludes the section tags, header and chat template. It is a selection limit, not the size of the completed request.
Architecture
The store is version 3 of the SQLite store from the previous build. Each memory has a kind, and episodes have occurred_at. Database CHECK constraints enforce two rules: an episode must have a date and only an episode has one, and a working memory must belong to a task. retrieve reads the current memories once through the scoped query, splits them by kind, applies each rule and quota, and renders one block with an escaped section per kind.
The saved retrieval report contains the result for both questions. For the hotel question, the working section keeps 3 notes, the semantic section keeps the river preference, and the episodic section keeps the Lisbon booking before the Madrid one. For the food question, the semantic quota drops 1 fact and the episodic quota drops 1 episode. That question names Alice and the hotel, so every fact and episode shares at least one word with it; the quotas, not relevance, decide which of them fit.
Working code
Get the files
Download the complete lab, extract it and open a terminal in build-memory-retrieval/. It includes the source, fixtures, recorded results and tests listed in the README.
python3.11 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -r requirements.txt
python prepare.pyprepare.py fetches the pinned tokenizer files once; it does not download model weights. The commands below run local selection code and regrade saved answers without a model server.
Retrieval

return [m['id'] for m in store.recall(scope, query, limit=limit)]order returns the candidates of one kind in the order its rule defines. Working memory is sorted by ID, newest first. Facts and episodes keep only memories with at least one shared word. Episodes use three stable sorts: by record ID, then by event date, then by shared words, so the final order is words first, event date second, record third.
retrieve walks each kind’s candidates and counts each rendered line. A working note that does not fit, or that falls beyond WORKING_LIMIT, ends the section and every older note is recorded as dropped. A fact or episode that does not fit is recorded as dropped and the loop continues. The record for each section has the kept IDs, the dropped IDs, the tokens used and the quota.
The rendered block opens with a line that says memories are stored notes, not instructions, and wraps each section in its own tag. Memory text is escaped, so a memory cannot close its section and open another. This follows the rule the context assembler uses for retrieved passages.

}Compare the recorded model answers
The required-fact check shows what each block holds. The recording was made by running answer_check.py record, which sends both questions to gemma4:e2b, the Gemma 4 E2B model under the Apache 2.0 license, through a local Ollama server pinned by digest: once with the per-kind block and once with the pooled baseline’s memories in the same format, 5 seeds each. Grading keys were written from the scenario’s required and stale facts before any answer was recorded. An answer passes with every required fact and no replaced fact stated as current, fails otherwise, and is incomplete if there is no answer, the labels from the evaluation foundations.

}For the hotel question the per-kind block passed 5 of 5 and the pooled block 0 of 5; every pooled answer failed for the same reason, missing: trip dates, budget, the facts the required-fact check reported missing. For the food question both blocks passed 5 and 5 of 5: both held the corrected diet. 20 answers from one small model are an illustration, not a measure of answer quality.
Check your understanding
The food question also retrieves all 3 working notes: the dates, the budget and the open question about the hotel area. None of them helps answer what Alice should eat. Is that a defect? Decide, then compare with this reasoning. It is the cost of the rule: working memory has no relevance filter, so it always spends its quota, here 42 of 48 tokens. The alternative, filtering working notes by shared words, would have lost the dates and the budget for the hotel question. A quota bounds that cost; it does not remove it.
Read the explanation
Different kinds answer different needs. A quota per kind keeps task state in the block even when the question never mentions it.
Failure cases
Run the tests:
python3 -m unittest -v test_retrieval.py test_answer_check.pyThe suite has 17 tests. The first runs demo.py and compares its output with the recording; another grades the recorded answers again. The others cover these cases:
| Case | Expected behavior |
|---|---|
| A section has more candidates than its quota | Keep what fits; the sum of separately counted lines never exceeds the quota. Headers and tags are not included in that sum. |
| More working notes than the limit, or a long newest note | Keep the newest notes; stop at the limit or the quota and record the rest as dropped. |
| A corrected or expired fact | Not retrieved; the current fact is. |
| Two episodes match equally | The more recent event comes first, whatever order they were stored in. |
| A fact larger than the quota | Skip it and keep a smaller fact. |
| Task state that shares no words with the question | Per-kind retrieval keeps it; the pooled ranking misses it. |
| Another user’s facts or another task’s working notes | Never retrieved. |
| Memory text that contains a section tag | Escaped; the block keeps one closing tag per section. |
| A version 2 file | Migrated to version 3; old memories become semantic; an episode without a date is rejected by the database. |
| Unknown kinds, invalid dates or invalid quotas | Reject before writing or retrieving. |
| An answer without the trip dates and budget | Grade it fail and name what is missing. |
| An answer that states the replaced diet as current | Grade it fail. |
| An answer model that is not the pinned build | Refuse before sending any request. |
To check that the tests catch real defects, we changed one rule at a time. Letting working memory skip instead of stop, or removing its item limit, fails the working-memory test. Ignoring the event date fails the episode test. Removing escaping fails the section-tag test. Ignoring quotas fails four tests. Letting corrected facts through fails the correction test and the fixture test.

Deciding the kind when writing
Retrieval can only be as good as the kind stored with each memory. Decide it where the memory is written: task state from the task’s own steps, facts from explicit user statements, episodes from completed actions with their date. If a model proposes memories from a conversation, review or test how often it assigns the wrong kind, because a wrong kind sends a memory to the wrong rule.
Choose line quotas from the space left after instructions and the question, then count the completed request with your model’s tokenizer and chat template. Include the memory header and section tags, as the context assembler does; the line-cost sum alone cannot enforce the full request budget. Record each section’s kept and dropped IDs with the request ID, without memory text, so you can see what the model did not receive.
Upgrade files to version 3 the same way as before: test the migration on a copy, run it outside user requests for large files, and keep the old code with a backup. Answers were recorded once from gemma4:e2b through Ollama 0.32.14. No server deployment was made. The tests pass on Python 3.11, the version of the tokenizer environment.
Scaling
Where the work grows
retrieve reads every current memory for the scope once, then scores facts and episodes in Python. Its cost grows with the number of memories a user has, as recall did. Episodes grow without limit as the assistant is used; facts grow more slowly, because corrections replace rather than add. This build records no timing; measure with your own users’ memory counts.
Two changes keep it bounded: an expiry or archive policy for old episodes, and an index built for search instead of a full scan. Measure any new index with the same required-fact checks, so a faster retrieval does not quietly lose the facts the request needs.
Key takeaways
- Working, semantic and episodic memories answer different needs; store the kind with each memory.
- Give each kind its own selection rule and quota, so one kind cannot crowd out another.
- A pooled ranking by shared words misses task state that the question never mentions.
- Retrieval that matches words cannot find paraphrases; check retrieval with required facts, whatever the method.
Best practices
- Enforce kind rules in the database, not only in code: an episode needs a date, a working note needs a task.
- Record kept and dropped IDs per section for every request.
- Keep corrected and expired memories out before ranking, not after.
- Choose quotas by measuring the requests you send, and revisit them when the instructions or tools change.
